History of Object

The following listed material was collected by Professor Henry Atkinson in relation to research projects. Starting in Manchester, collecting continued in Melbourne particularly as many of the items in the Department had been obtained by Dr. W. J. Tuckfield and their purpose and use was not known. The X-ray lists relate to equipment in store. See donations from Dr. A. Woodhouse.

Some lists and student instruction sheets and manuals were obtained by Dr. W. J. Tuckfield on visits to U.S.A and were used for teaching. Dr. W. J. Tuckfield was a great experimenter and collector of gadgets in an uncritical manner.

Story of the life of K.V. Mattingly's father who graduated from the Australian College of Dentisry in 1898 and went to the Western Australian goldfields as a Dentist. The book contains many interesting photos and stories, some of which regarding his application to submit work for the award fo the DDSc (Melb) should be checked against the Faculty and College Council Minutes as several members were opposed on personal grounds.

Hard bound illustrated catalogue of Ash and Sons 'Mineral Teeth 1904'. With several hand written notes by P. C. Ash. 1905. Typed letter and copies (carbon), pasted in back with some prices.

History of Object

The company Ash and Sons, had offices on the ground floor of the Spring Street College Building from where they moved to 'the city' and later to Carlton to larger premises and shops. When they were finally taken over by 'Dentsply' much of their surplus was given to the then Bureau of Dental Standards, Abbotsford. When this Laboratory was transferred to Canberra some excess stock was given away. This came to me via Max Chong, technical officer at the laboratory, to Professor Martin Tyas, Dental School, University of Melbourne. (Professor Henry Atkinson).

Book came from a collection of books and papers given by Doctors George and Edward Marks of 2 Collins Street Melbourne, private practitioners. The brothers were the sons of Mr. I. Marks, Dentist, who commenced the practice in partnership with Mr. T. Adamson in the late 1890s. T. Adamson was the father of Dr. K. Adamson, later Sir Kenneth.
