Bottle, Mercury
Brief Description Similar to Dental Museum Collection item 677 but different in shape. As mercury reacts with most metals and glass, it was difficult at the time (1880s), to produce and manipulate leak proof containers that could dispense mercury on a drop by drop basis. Box wood could be turned, drilled and threaded. Joints were very easily made leak proof by turning or cutting threads on the parts. Air Rotor Attachment
Brief Description Metal box containing all fittings (electric foot control, air water pipes and connections) for operating an air driven handpiece with a special clamp for fitting over the arm of the bracket table of unit. The controls were attached to the moving arm (F & R(?)) of the electric motor and cold be operated by the dentist without moving the foot. Made and supplied by a local Ash company. History of Object The Australian College of Dentistry was slow to acknowledge air rotors and little thought had been given to their use or installation in the new building. Some Spring Street units were modified to take air rotor equipment and others had this type of arm attachment. Changes were occurring so rapidly in this field that it was difficult for supplies to keep up. This attachment later became available as a free standing unit for air rotors alone. Air was supplied by a separate compressor. Materials and Finishes Aluminium and Stainless Steel standard fittings. References Clinical / Conservative Dentistry
