Specimen, Teaching, Death Mask
Brief Description 'Death mask' of subject with right eye missing. Made by Dr. W. J. Tuckfield of coloured wax over plaster c.1930s. History of Object The 'death mask' came from the Australian College of Dentistry and was made as a museum and teaching object. It was a hobby of Dr. Tuckfield to experiment with new materials and this was probably a 'Negocol' impression. From personal knowledge Dr. Tuckfield was a born craftsman with a great desire to try anything new. He could not resist a salesman with a new gadget. He tried every new dental material that was produced and the more difficult the technique the more he persisted. Apart from the following dealing with impression and denture base materials, check photography, casting, electroplating etc. As well as his technical skill he had an 'artistic flare'. Unfortunately he kept very few records. (Professor Henry Atkinson). Materials and Finishes Cast gypsum and coloured wax. References Teaching / Dental Prosthetics

Brief Description Typical well made student instrument cabinet with most instruments. History of Object At Spring Street, students had to provide ninety-nine percent of their instruments and tools. Casting, Student
Marked on cast: "51"
Brief Description Cast in technique metal. Complex lower right 7,6,2,1 and left 1,2, 6,7, with clasps and rests on lower right 8,3, and lower left 3,5,8. Roach T clasps on lower left and right 5. Attachments for lower right 2,1 and left 1,2 on cast number 51. History of Object A most difficult exercise for a student, but very well executed in this example. Typical of the 1930 to 1950 approach to partial denture design. The number 51 is significant as this indicates and early change in teaching introduced by Professor Henry Atkinson. Previously each student had to prepare his model by a compound impression from a 'master gypsum' cast. Flexible moulds were introduced so that during vacation periods sufficient casts were produced for students in the coming term. The next change was for students to design and fabricate to wax pattern stage only. Made in the Department of Dental Prosthetics. Materials and Finishes Gypsum and metal. References Teaching
