Photograph was presented to Professor Storey as Dean, otherwise little is known about the item. It is however similar to photographs of other dental dinners.

Original labels were typed and stuck on the outside of the glass.

History of Object

In 1947 Howard Worner as 'Director' and Professor in waiting for chair in metallography was sent on a promotional tour to UK, USA etc. He visited the University of Manchester, spent time at Washington University and was very impressed with the American way. He had previously modeled the Australian Bureau on American lines.
Framed photos were collected by HFA from junk when the Australian Bureau of Dental Standards 'lab' moved to Canberra.

History of Object

Dr. R. W. Shepherd announced his retirement a matter of weeks before the end of the year, it was a complete shock to all concerned; as deputy head he was expected to carry on. Peter Reade's barbecue was a private effort at his home for Professor Atkinson's benefit.

Photograph showing dentist and patient in surgery of the early 1900s (as depicted at the Beamish Museum UK). "I remember similar surgeries which were a front room in the family home. All equipment is portable. Note 'Monarch of the Glen' over the fire. When I visited in June 2002 it was as depicted with roaring coal fire. The gas cylinders look modern, white paint for O2. Face mask appears to be 'oiled silk'". (Professor Henry Atkinson).

Photograph of group of graduands including Keith D. B. Faulkner PhD, 15 March 1986, Professor J. C. Waterson Dean, Dr. John Harcourt, Dr. Bill Ralph. All three were senior lecturers in the Department of Prosthetics - named changed and combined with Conservative Department to become Restorative Dentistry.

History of Object

Keith Faulkner was a Lecturer and Senior Lecturer on staff of the Prosthetics Department. He came from Queensland where he was working on a radiation dental tissue project which could not be continued. Changed to 'materials' study and then under Professor H.F. Atkinson, to mandibular movement. He transferred to hospital staff and then completed writing his thesis. He was a hospital employee at the time of his graduation.

History of Object

When E. Storey transferred from chair of Conservative Dentistry to Child Dental Health, John D. Waterson from Perth was appointed. He became Dean in due course. The Department's name changed from Conservative Dentistry to Restorative Dentistry. He married Aisa Stragis, Senior Lecturer Enodontics and on retirement moved to Yarrawonga. He died, 15 June 1993.

Photograph was taken shortly before Professor Henry Atkinson's retirement in 1978 when he was made Professor Emeritus. Professor Atkinson was the first, last and only Professor of Prosthetics. Dr. W. J. Tuckfield was too old for full appointment in 1947 and was made acting under Professor Arthur Amies.

History of Object

'Shep' as he was generally known, or sometimes 'Roy' was the longest serving member of the Department of Dental Prosthetics. He retired at the same time as Professor Henry F. Atkinson. This series of portraits was put together by Professor John Harcourt. Dr. Sheperd was 'First Assistant' in the Australian College of Dentistry when Professor Atkinson arrived in 1958.

Colour portrait photograph of Dr. Bill (William) Ralph. He was appointed to staff of the Dental Prosthetics Department at 711 Elizabeth Street as being well know to Dr. R. W. Shepherd. He worked on piezo-electrical effects of bone. He was a gifted musician, his great joy being organ playing.

Colour photograph of Tad Dobrostansky and Professor Henry Atkinson at Tad Dobrostansky's retirement from the Dental School. Photograph was taken during a morning tea celebration at the Whylie Centre.

History of Object

Dr. William Tuckfield was College/School photographer for many years, in fact he was the first officially appointed. Professor Henry Atkinson was responsible for appointing Tad as Dean of the Faculty and a respect and friendship developed. "He was a perfectionist and loyal colleague doing much for the School". Photograph was taken by Chris Owen who is the present Dental School Photographer.

History of Object

Rubbings were made by Dr. W. J. Tuckfield most probably to try out the technique of 'Rubbing'. He could have taken a close up photograph, having taken many photographs of both the interior and exterior of the building.

Part A contains the following text from the foundation stone: This / Foundation Stone/ Was Laid By / The Honorable / Sir John Maden C C M G / Chief Justice of Victoria / And / President of This College 4th March 1907 / The Melbourne Dental Hospital / Founded 1890.

"The following sepia prints on grey mounts are from an album given to me by Dr. W. J. Tuckfield when helping him to move from his Toorak flat to the Majestic Hotel. He claimed them as his personal copies taken in 1907-8, by a photographer from a Melbourne paper. Several were reproduced in my 'History' (Prof. Henry F. Atkinson). Several have named overlays."

Harry Gill had a good research approach to problems and worked on mandibular movement in particular, as well as muscle, and muscle action and histology. He was very methodical. He studied electronics under Dr. David Dewhurst from the Department of Experimental Physiology, and later worked with him on muscle tone.
