General Note on Extracting Forceps

Because of the difficulties in describing the complex shapes of extracting forceps, the manufacturers over came the problem by using catalogues with full size numbered illustrations of each instrument. By common agreement each maker used the same numbering system, the only difference being in the size and quality of the illustration in their catalogues. In the on-line catalogue, descriptions are brief and are made viewing the forceps lying on a flat surface with the handle towards the operator. Left and right refer to the patient’s, as do ‘upper’ and ‘lower’ for the appropriate jaw. Three types of joint are mentioned in the catalogue, ‘simple’ in which the two arms are held together by a rivet or screw, ‘pin’ generally for lower forceps where during the forging process, one arm was made to pass through the other and is secured by a pin, and ‘box’ a superior type of pin which gives an excellent and long-lasting instrument. For the identification of an instrument reference should be made to the catalogues. See the Bibliography for manufacturer’s and catalogue details.
