Brief Description

Illuminated address presented to Harry Brooks Allen in gratitude for his contribution as Secretary to the Intercolonial Medical Congress of Australasia, 1889. Certificate has gilt, tooled, brown leather cover which opens to two pages (laid down) bearing the address decorated with green, brown and blue artwork, and on opposite page, in manuscript, in columns, the signatures of delegates. Designed and executed by Troedal & Company, Melbourne.

Brief Description

Silver claret jug with ornate relief decoration of lion's head, angels, and overall floral work. Pear-shaped on stepped foot with lever-opened lid. In case.

History of Object

This jug was presented to Robertson by the staff of the Melbourne Hospital on his retirement in 1887. According to hallmark books, the letter "K" in outline stands for 1885 and London; Queen's head ends before 1890. Also see registration number 679.

Brief Description

18 carat gold watch presented to Dr. Frederick W.C. Beavan by the Inhabitants of the town of Derwent in Tasmania, on 2 May 1851. Watch has dual face (hours and seconds), central engraved floral and leaf design, surrounded by Roman numerals and intersected at the bottom with a circular seconds clock (hand missing). Minutes and hours indicated by two black metal clock hands. Knob and ring on top of clock face; pressing releases internal compartment with engraved inscription, winding mechanism and maker's marks. Engraved cross-hatching design on back external surface of watch. Protective glass for watch face is missing. Included with watch, gold and metal engraved winding key as well as black leather case lined with beige silk and purple velvet.

History of Object

This fob watch was donated by Frank C. Beavan, grandson of Frederick Beavan, to the Victorian Branch fo the Australian Medical Association in 1965. The A.M.A. donated its museum collection of documents and artefacts to the University of Melbourne's Medical Museum in 1994.

Originally made as a part of a scientific apparatus used to record muscle twitching in a frog's leg, etc., the item has been re-used as a presentation piece or trophy. Associated with the Melbourne University Physiology Department and, particularly, Prof. R.D. Wright, to whom it was presented.
