Brief Description

Indenture certificate of five year apprenticeship for Thomas Stillman to serve his father William, Surgeon and Apothecary at Steele Ashton. The indenture was subsequently transferred to Joshua Vardy of Surrey, upon William's death, 1844.

History of Object

Stillman arrived in Australia in 1852 and was the first Health Officer of Richmond. He came from Steeple Ashton, Wiltshire. The indenture of five years duration was transferred on 3rd January 1844 to Joshua Lambert Vardy of Stanford Street, Black Friars in Surrey

The practice of apprenticeship as a means of gaining a medical education ended in 1858 with the creation of the General Council of Medical Education in England. Formerly a student could, after serving his apprenticeship, take his examination at one of the Royal Colleges.

History of Object

Banting discovered insulin. Donor wrote (in Correspondence File), "When I was a first year medical student at Sheffield University, U.K., I was retruning to U.K. in November 1939 from the Bahamas via Canada. Crossing the Atlantic on board the 'Duchess of Richmond' was Dr. F. Banting, (late Sir Frederick). I obtained the enclosed autograph from Sir F. Banting and at the time he said to me with a twinkle in his eye, 'You might as well have my colleague's signature too - one day he'll be famous.' Hence the additional signature - I don't know if he ever achieved fame!"

Brief Description

Three letters and envelopes, two of which were addressed to Dr. Lewis Balfour and another which was probably forwarded to Dr. Balfour. The envelopes were all posted and addressed to the Women's Hospital, Carlton, where Dr. Balfour worked. The letters comprise: (1) a letter to Dr. Balfour from the University of Melbourne Science Club inviting him to a picnic at Ferntree Gully, dated 27 September 1898; (2) another letter from Dr. Murray Norton, Hon. Secretary of the University Medical Association about joining their association, dated 3 October 1898; (3) a letter addressed to J.M. Gardiner, which is a printed notice of Agenda for the Medical Society of Victoria's meeting for 5 October 1898 - the notice is dated 3 October. This notice was probably passed on to Dr. Balfour for attending a meeting of the Society. Dr. Balfour was a graduate from the University of Melbourne, receing his M.B. and B.S. in 1896-97.

Brief Description

Indenture of Apprenticeship, setting a legal agreement between Joseph Rutter and Thilwell Pike, signed and wax sealed on 9 August 1858. The Indenture was for Joseph Rutter's five-year apprenticeship to Thilwell Pike, a surgeon and apothecary. During this time, Pike had to provide food and lodging for Rutter in return for faithful service and not revealing Pike's secrets in surgery or apothecary work.

This item was originally donated to the Medical Society of Victoria (which later became part of the Victorian Branch of the Australian Medical Association). The A.M.A. donated its historical collection of documents and artifacts to the University of Melbourne's Medical History Museum in 1994.

Handwritten letter from the Colonial Secretary's Office, addressed to "William Augustus Dobbyn Esq. Wangaratta", and dated 19 June 1855. The Governor of the Colony of Victoria had appointed Dr. Dobbyn Coroner of the Colony, and the Colonial Secretary's Office in Melbourne was forwarding the Commission document. The Commission was not included with the letter.

Brief Description

Fourteen handwritten testimonial letters (with one envelope) attesting to the professional competence, work experience and character of Dr. William Dickie. The letters were compiled by his former lecturers at the University of Glasgow, the apothecary and surgeon under whom he was apprenticed, former employer and colleagues at the Paisley Hospital, the "House of Recovery", as well as other medical colleagues at the time. Majority of letters dated April 1845.

MHM03849 Indenture: certificate of Indenture for Apothecary Apprenticeship and exam, Dr. G. Fetherston, 1848-56

Brief Description

Two copies of the Certificate of Indenture, setting a legal agreement between Gerald Fetherston and his father Gerald Fetherston Senior, signed and wax sealed on 28 August 1848. The Indenture was for Gerald Fetherston's seven-year apprenticeship to his father who was a practising Apothecary. During the seven year apprenticeship, G. Fetherston Snr. was to provide food and lodging for his apprentice in return for faithful service and the keeping of his father's apothecary trade secrets. One copy is annotated.

Also pinned with the Indenture certificates were a letter from the College of Surgeons, Dublin, admitting Gerald Fetherston for examination for a Diploma of the College, signed by Eden Nilforth (18/4/1856), and a testimonial letter from Dr. R. Peyters, Roscommon Infirmary, testifying that Gerald Fetherston worked at the hospital for six months, from May to November 1852 (dated 8/3/1853).

Brief Description

Indenture of Apprenticeship certificate setting a legal agreement between James Phillips, his father James Phillips and Samuel Vincent Pryce, signed and wax sealed on 26 August 1836. The Indenture was for James Phillips five-year apprenticeship to Samuel Pryce, a surgeon and apothecary. During this time, Pryce was required to provide food and lodgings for Phillips in return for faithful service and not revealing Pryce's secrets in surgery or apothecary work.

Nine handwritten testimonial letters attesting to the academic excellence, professional competence, work experience and character of Dr Harry Brookes Allen, in reference to Allen's application for the position as Demonstrator of Morbid Anatomy at the Melbourne Hospital in September 1876. At the time, Harry Brookes Allen was working as Demonstrator in Anatomy at the University of Melbourne and had spent several weeks as Resident Medical Officer, at the Melbourne Hospital.

Donated by Mary Goldsworthy nee Johnson, daughter of Nurse A.R. Coan, who later became Sister Johnson. Nurse Coan nursed in London during World War I: later, as Sister Johnson, she opened the family home in Beulah (near Warrnambool, Vic.) as a private hospital during the depression. Nurse A.R. Coan also did district nursing before going to London during WWI.
