Brief Description

This Book of the University of Melbourne Certificates for the Degrees of M.B. and B.S. holds the 35 certificates associated with completing this degree, from the "Certificate of Preliminary Examination for Students in Medicine" to "Certificate of Completion of the Course." The certificates completed in the volume cover Dr. Webster's subjects from 3rd to 5th years (1909-11) of his Medical Degree, although the certificates completed were all signed in 1911. Each page in the volume comprises a different certificate, which lists the subject requirements for completing that component of the Medical Degree. Dr. Reginald Webster later became a well-acclaimed pathologist, working at the Royal Children's Hospital.

History of Object

This M.B. and B.S. Certificate Book was bestowed on Dr. Reginald Webster when he completed his degree. The volume was located in the process of being thrown out and was forwarded on by another doctor to the museum.

The Diploma is glued to a backing board, which is a cheap black and white print most likely used by the framer. The Diploma was encased in a modern wooden frame, which was badly damaged and removed for conservation reasons.

Brief Description

Certificate of service at the Austin Hospital presented to Dr. Bernhard Traugott Zwar, by the Committee of the Hospital, dated 29 June 1904. Dr. Bernhard Zwar worked in the position of "Medical Superintendant of the Austin Hospital" for three years and was presented with a certificate expressing the Hospital Committee's "...sense of great and enduring value of his services to the institution" and wishing him future success. The certificate is set between two metal rods with the remains of red ribbons and tassles adorning the frame. The certificate was screen pritned, but also signed by the President of the Hospital.

The certificate was glued onto a plyboard sheet and framed, although the frame had been removed prior or subsequent to the original donation to the Medical Society of Victoria.

Brief Description

University of Melbourne Certificate Book for the Degrees of M.B. and B.S; holds the 35 certificates associated with completing this degree, from the "Certificate of Preliminary Examination of Students in Medicine" to "Certificate of Completion of the Course". The certificates completed in the volume cover Hemsley's subjects from third to fifth years (1909-1911) of his medical degree, first and second year certificates (1907-1908) are dated but not signed. Each page in the volume comprises a different certificate, and Hemlsley's name is filled in for all of them, even if no other details have been completed. Item is a slim, dark blue volume with gold-printed cover. Inside cover is patterned with marbling, front and back.

Certificate for the degrees of M.B. & B.S., University of Melbourne, awarded to John Ingatius Parer, bound in black leather folder with gold lettering and decorative work on front cover. Contains 33 completed certificates from preliminary examination (1899) to Fourth/Fifth Year (1906). Certificate 34, Completion of Course, has not been filled in. A typed certification for Anaesthesia (17/5/06) has been pasted to a blank page after Certificate 34, and a handwritten page certifies post-mortem demonstration attendance. Some certificate signatures are undated; some 1905 and 1906; some 1911.

History of Object

Donated by Brian P. Russell, nephew of Drs. Inez and John Parer. Dr. Inez Parer and family left a very considerable bequest to the Mercy Hospital.
