"Eastern Rectory 1850".

Brief Description

Hardcover notebook with marbelled cover. Inside fly-leaf, notebook is labelled as, "Eastern Recotry 1850," possibly belonging to a minister from the Anglican St Peter's Eastern Hill Church. The notebook has a list of the "Contents of the box" which lists common pharmaceutical medicines. The book is also full of prescriptions and directions for th euse of herbal and chemical products, like a personal pharmacopeia. The even writing suggests that it was compiled as a reference text.

History of Object

This handwritten pharmacopoeia was written in associaiton with a travelling pharmaceutical kit. As the volume is labelled "Eastern Rectory" it is possible the volume could have been written by a minister from St Peter's Eastern Hill on his way to Australia for use in the colonies. The volume was given to the Universeity of Melbourne Library and was later passed on to the Medical History Museum.

The case entries were recorded chronologically according to R.V.E.E.H.'s public sessions of patient consultation. However, the resluts of repeat consultations with patients were often recorded under their original page entry, even if the consultations were years apart. Each original consultation entry was given a separate page for descriptions of symptoms, medical history, diagnosis and prescription details. Eye charts and diagrams are sometimes included with consultation entries. These two volumes were part of a larger group of patient record books, as the second volume has on its spine, "Book IV".

Two ink-blotters advertising Ovaltine and Glyco-Heron (Smith) respectively, as well as two sets of directions for Burroughs Hypodermic needles were removed from registration numbers 3487 to 3489. These items have been linked to this accession for convenience.

Brief Description

Dr. Lewis Balfour's notebooks, dating from December 1900 to February 1902. The notebooks all contain informal handwritten entries which cover both his professional interest in medical conditions and disease etc., as well as his personal interests, such as learning German and his travels throughout Europe (e.g. Germany) and the United Kingdom (eg. Scotland). The notebooks also hold some drawings of monuments and places Dr. Balfour visited. His medical notes include some diagrams. Dr. Balfour was a former graduate from the University of Melbourne, receiving his M.B. and B.S. in 1896-97.

Brief Description

Three notebooks compiled by Sir R. Euan MacLean during his undergraduate lectures and clinical sessions at the Royal Melbourne Hospital in 1936-7 as well as a series of lectures by Professor Sutherland in 1942. The volumes comprise:

(1) "Anaesthetics"; compiled at the Royal Melbourne Hospital in 1936 and holds notes on a series of lectures given by a Dr. Green. The last entry is dated 28/1/1942 and was probably added later to his notes on anaesthetics. Loose notes enclosed in volume, as well as a graph and chart on a patient, dated 29/1/42.

(2) "Clinical Notes R.E.G. MacLean Royal Melbourne Hospital", notes from clinical sessions from 6/2/1936 - 5/8/1937. The back of the volume wa sused for information on what drugs were available for particular complaints. Loose notes enclosed in volume.

(3) The third notebook (small binder), was compiled later in 1942, when Dr. MacLean took notes at a series of lectures on Neuro-anatomy given by Professor Sutherland. There is a note at the front of this binder to a Dr. Cox, apologising for the possible illegibility of the notes.

As the Patient Record Book was compiled in 1936, when Dr. MacLean was an undergraduate, the patients he treated at the Royal Melbourne Hospital were most likely as part of his hospital training for his medical degree. Sir R. Euan MacLean graduated with his M.M. and B.S. from the University of Melbourne in 1938.

Note: the volume is entitled "Melbourne Hospital", but must have been old stationery, as the title of the hospital became the "Royal Melbourne Hospital" in 1935.

Brief Description

Cash book, entitled "Intercolonial Medical Congress 1890", which was reused (the pages with the original entries have been cut out) by the University of Melbourne's Department of Pathology, as a cash book for all departmental costs between December 1929 and December 1936. The cash book is self indexing, with all cash transactions entered under the appropriate letter categories as well as having a handwritten index at the front of the volume. This cash book was used for all departmental expenditures, including such categories as "Fittings and Furniture", "Electric Light & Gas" and "Animals." Leather binding.

Roll book of fourth year medical students working at the Royal Melbourne Hospital Clinical School from 1930 to 1986. A handwritten weekly roll was compiled for the students from 1930-2. From 1933 onwards, typed lists show the fourth year students enrolled at the Royal Melbourne Hospital. Additions to the class and student withdrawals are indicated on each yearly roll. Inside the fly leaf of the volume is a folder entitled, "Quorum 4" which contained typed sheets detailing the constitution and rules of the Student Selection Committee for the Royal Melbourne Hospital.

Brief Description

Mary R. Lyle's general medicine exam notes, most likely compiled for her final M.B.B.S. examination in 1921 (see registration number 3714). Mary Lyle divided her note sinto subject categories and compiled an index at the back of the volume. Her handwritten notes cover anaesthetics, the digestive system, blood etc. The notebook also contains loose pages of notes as well as two examination sheets from the Melbourne Hospital (one of which has a sketch of a dog on the back).

Two volumes of Mary R. Lyle's surgery examination notes, probably compiled for her final surgery exam in 1921; the first exercise book holds an annotated copy of the "Final Examination for Degrees of M.B. and B.S., 1920." The first volume, entitled "Surgery", also holds a few pages of general medicine notes at one end of the exercise book. Brief Description

Bound notebook used by Dr. James Edward Neild as a roll book for fifth year medicine students who attended his lectures in Forensic Medicine, at the University of Melbourne from 1866 to 1904. As there is only one entry each year for the medical students, either the volume was used as a roll for the students who would be attending his lecture series or Dr. Neild gave a single dlecture at the Medical School on an annual basis. The last entry in the black notebook is "Finis" after the list of students for 1904. Dr. James Neild was more generally known as a music and drama critic.

Brief Description

Bound volume of Nhill Hospital - Typhoid Fever Charts. Each page comprises on patient's chart, recording: Name, Age; Total of Baths; Result (Cured or Died); Day of Disease [the date); Cent./Fahr. (Centigrade and Fahrenheit temperature for each chart point); M.E (Morning and Evening); Pulse, Resp.; Urine O2; Reaction; Sp: Gr:; Albumen, Sugar; Pus; Bowels; Vidal's Reaction; Baths.

TheTyphoid Chart's points, which record the patient's fluctuating temperature, are graphed in black ink, with the bath temperatures and duraiton marked in red ink. The doctor or nurse also recorded on the chart under each date the food consumed by the patient as well as their changing physical symptoms. This volume which includes both male and female patients covers the period from 4 April 1904 to 30 March 1905. The volume could well have been the last in a sequence of volumes recording the charts of both male and female patients. The volume has a handwritten index on the inside of the front cover, recording the patient's name and page number.

Brief Description

Prescriptions compiled by Pharmacist Mr. Grounds, whose Pharmacy was located at 286 Ferrass Street, South Melbourne, in the late nineteenth century. The prescriptions were compiled by Mr. Grounds in a vellum-covered notebook, as journal clippings and handwritten scraps of paper. The notebook is self indexing with the predominantly handwritten entries arranged under alphabetic letter cateogires. The notebook also holds loose handwritten notes and clippings, including a list of addresses for suppliers. The separate journal clippings and scraps of paper have no specific order, but unlike the notebook entries, some of these prescriptions are dated, spanning from 1870-1887.

Brief Description

Sibyl Caridwen Bevans's handwritten Anatomy notes and coloured diagrams, compiled as a medical student at the University of Melbourne, c.1903-1908. Notes in lose folio format. Original order is not evident.

History of Object

These notes which originally belonged to Dr. Sibyl Bevan were enclosed in one of the volumes in an 1897 set of Quain's Anatomy. Sibyl Bevan's nephew, Mr. D.L.A. Bevan, inherited the set from his father Dr. S. Bevan and donated the set of Quain's Anatomy (with notes enclosed) to the University of Melbourne's Brownless Medical Library in 1995.
