Brief Description

Two metal cone-shaped test tube holders and glass tubes for a centrifuge. The test tube holders have a slightly flared lip, tapering down to a rounded bottom tip. The test tubes are more cone-shaped tapering to a more pointed tip.

History of Object

These test tube holders and tubes were originally donated to the Medical Society of Victoria (which later became part of the Victorian Branch of the Australian Medical Association). The A.M.A. donated its museum collection of documents and artefacts to the University of Melbourne in 1994.

Brief Description

Glass bottle sealed with cork stopper labelled, "Picrocarmine 1882 JDK" which belonged to Dr. John Drummond Kirkland, first professor of Chemistry in the University of Melbourne. Dr. John Kirkland was lecturer in Chemistry in 1866-1882 and Professor in Chemistry from 1882 until his death in 1885. A small sample of the brown Picrocarmine powder is still sealed in the bottle.
