Brief Description

Set of fourteen medical instruments in leather case. Instruments made by a variety of makers, mostly in London. Case is dumbbell shaped, with three straps and buckles, and has a woven brass wire handle; made by A.C. Fortescue, Goulburn, Australia.

Brief Description

Leather doctor's bag, with snap clasp and carry handle, side pockets in interior, fabric lined. Used until 1916.

History of Object

This bag and its contents (registration numbers 75-91) were used by Dr. James Jamieson, who practiced in Warnambool and Melbourne, later lecturing in Obstetrics at Melbourne University. He died in 1916.

Brief Description

Rectangular metal case with pull-up lid, which holds 24 tubes of hypodermic and ophthalmic solutions and tablets. The tubes are secured by a push-up metal bar and lid to a separate compartment. The case has a contents list inside the lid but no labels to indicate the kit manufacturer. All of the tubes of solutions or tablets were manufactured by Felton, Grimwade and Duerdins Pty. Ltd., except for the Adrenalin .0003 tablets which were manufactured by Tromax Limited., Manufacturing Division of Sigma Co. Ltd. The larger tubes are secured by the metal bar and the smaller tubes are separated in an adjoining compartment in the case with an internal lid. The tube holding the Adrenalin .0006G and others are missing from the original set.

Black pseudo-leather (linen), fold-out case with press-clip seal, containing 11 tubes of tablets. The cylindrical tubes are flattened at top and bottom ends, sealed with cork stoppers with black vulcanite lids and black on either orange, pink or green labels. The case was owned by Dr.H. Blaubaum.

Brass medicine box used by Cingalese doctor, believed to be c.1600s, although this date has not been substantiated. "Time" lock on lid of box with European numbers is broken. Medicine box originally had several compartments as indicated by markings on internal walls.

Black-grained leather medical case, used by Dr. Norman H. Hurse. Case has four fawn leatherette-faced and lined drawers with leather flap pulls. There is a compartment for blood pressure kit and one for medications. A pocket in the lid is provided for papers. Case has nickel-plated spring locks and a carry handle.

Includes numerous items: various ampoules, suture materials, blades, thermometer, various medications, specula, forceps, needles, hypodermic needles, gauze, sphygmomanometer, various pamphlets and articles.
