Brief Description

Rectangular wooden block with brass turntable and slide holding clips. Block painted black with mitred top edges.

History of Object

Turntable fitted with slide showing section of spinal cord longitudinal section 31. Used for holding the slide while the ring was painted around the coverslip. Most of the old slides have this ring, which acted as a seal. This item was originally used by the Anatomy Department, University of Melbourne.

This is an early form of Watson microscope, serial number 913, with a screw and lever fine adjustment. Supplied with a wide range of additional equipment. Objective size 3/2 inch belongs to 'Lenses', registration number 23.15

History of Object

Used by Sir Harry Allen in the Pathology Department, University of Melbourne. This equipment would have allowed him to achieve a magnification of 300x to 400x, enabling a different count of 400 cells per minute. Nose piece is a later modification. Note that parts 32.3 and 32.4 (incorrectly labelled on microscope 33, q.v.catalogue sheet), do not belong to this microscope, even though it appears that an objective may be missing. Eyepiece is 32.4; objectives are 32.2 and 33.3

History of Object

In 1864 the University bought the microscope for G.B. Halford from the Reverend John Bleasdale, a prominent Catholic clergyman and an active member of the Microscopic Society of Australia. Made by Powell and Lealand, London, the stand has been made "proof against corrosion of acids and the injurious actions a alkalis and spirit of wine by plating with brass with silver and then gilding with more than half an ounce of the purest gold." Donor was the grand-daughter of G.B. Halford.

There was a shortage of optical instruments after the war and during 1947 to 1948. In Melbourne, simple microscopes were made in considerable numbers by the Australian Optical Company and the Munitions Supply Laboratories, (ordinance factory). The Australian Optical Company was headed by L.D. Colechin and the Ordinance Factory microscope was designed by J.J. McNeil and G.G. Schaefer. Brass ringing turntable in wooden stand, used for making the black circle of paint on microscope slides which marks the area on which to place the specimen. Brass wheel has two blue metal clasps to secure the slide.

This ringing turntable was originally donated to the Medical Society of Victoria (which later became part of the Victorian Branch of the Australian Medical Association). The A.M.A. donated its museum collection of documents and artefacts to the University of Melbourne in 1994.

Brief Description

Professor George Britton Halford's microscope slide cabinet: walnut cabinet set on large step base with four legs and front glas panel door. Wooden frame drawers with paper linings. Drawers follow a numerical sequence from 1 to 28 (inked onto drawer knobs), with drawer 11 missing from cabinet. One or several subejct labels are glued onto the front of each drawer, with drawer 19 holding detailed comments on the usbject categories pencilled onto the internal paper lining of the drawer. Microscope slides include both commercially made slide mounts and those probably made by Halford or his staff within the University of Melbourne.

Microscope set on circular base with tripod stand and attached curved vertical arm which holds: reflecting mirror; condenser; dark field illumination disk; mechanical stage; field diaphragm; coarse adjustment knob. Base of stage was probably a later addition. Cylindrical body of microscope is set on tip of arm by metal thread and has: triple objective rotating head; graduated binocular drawtubes; fine adjustment knob. Top of drawtube open for inserting oculars. Two oculars held in drawtubes (unknown magnification). Kit includes wooden box, holding one achromatic ocular; 2 objectives; brass "Live Box"; "glass slide; narrow glass container; Field stop"; "Crossed Nicoll Prisms"; condenser; arm for securing slides, etc.

"J.A. Pond Homeopathic Chemist" wooden box holding: 2 achromatic oculars; 3 objectives; 2 brass "Live Box"; glass slide; glass tube; glass bottle with solution; arm for securing slides, etc.

Microscope is stored on wooden circular stand with maroon felt top and glass dome. The outer diameter of the circular stand was probably added later as an extension to the top-heavy microscope, as seen in the different brass and the screw attachments.

Bolted to central rod is a curved vertical arm with adjustment knob. Cylindrical body of microscope is set on the curved arm by metal thread and comprises: objective; graduated binocular drawtubes; fine adjustment knob. Top of drawtube open for inserting oculars. Two achromatic oculars held in drawtubes. Kit includes woodne box, holding: 6 objectives, 3 with original tins; 2 empty objective tins; also adjustment screw.

Microscope is stored in square wooden case with metal handle and key.

Brief Description

Dr. W.H. Royal's portable travelling laboratory with all the materials needed to make stained slide mounts from fresh samples. Cedar square chest with hinged lid, front-hinged pull-down panel with leather straps which attach to lid, for securing the chest. Chest has separate top compartments for solution bottles and equipment as well as two front drawers. Drawers comprise a long side drawer and bottom tray with individual components Blue velvet lining inside lid is torn and worn. Over two hundred items.

History of Object

This microscopy set belonged to Dr. w.H. Royal of Castle Combe, England. The set had also been used by a Missionary Doctor to Africa, who had diagnosed Malaria and Schistomiasis with its help. The set was later given to Dr. Geoffrey Allwood, who donated the set to the University of Melbourne's Medical History Museum in January 1995.

Sir Frank Macfarlane Burnet's monocular and binocular compound microscope with sivler and black frame, manufactured by Nippon Kogaku, Tokyo. Microscope set on circular base with curved vertical arm which has attached: a reflecting mirror; condensers; mechanical stage; field diaphragm; filter holders; coarse and fine adjustment knobs. V-shaped upper body of microscope is attached to the tip of the curved arm and holds: a triple objective rotating head; graduated monocular drawtube; binocular tubes and drawtube. Drawtubes alternated by body release locks. Microscope has a detachable light source.

History of Object

This microscope was donated by the Department of Microbiology, University of Melbourne, to the Medical History Museum in 1995. Contact person was Mr. John Gorry.

Microscope was originally presented to Burnet by the Japan Bacteriological Society on 7 April 1961.

Early model camera lucida in velvet-padded wooden box. Consists of mirror fixed on bar, to which is attached movable eyepiece above screw-adjusted ring clamp. Separate attachment is circular with six equally spaced "porthole" lenses. No identifying marks. Attachment is marked "HD" with curved arrow beneath.
