MHM03492 Mortar and pestle: Chinese mortar and pestle sets (3 sets)
Wax seals bearing a Chinese character, also price tags from antique dealers.
Image >>

Brief Description

One triple set of c.1870s stoneware mortars and matching pestles with wooden handles, which were purchased by Sir Roy Douglas Wright on a trip to China c.1950s. Both mortars are covered on the esternal side with a white glaze, overlaid with a blue flower and leaf design. The original designer's seal, set in red wax, is located on the side, near the base of each bowl (the smaller bowl has a lump of waxx on its base). The antique dealers' price tags have also been left on each mortar, although the Chinese characters are very faded. The mortars fit into one another as a set and both date back to the Qing Dynasty, 120 years ago. The inside surface of the smaller mortar and the stoneware tip of its matching pestle both show the stains of a bright blue substance which was presumably mixed within the mortar.

History of Object

The mortars and pestles were purchased by Sir Roy Douglas Wright during a trip to China, c.1950s. Sir Douglas Wright's widow donated the mortars and pestles to the Medical History Museum in 1992.
