Brief Description

Black leather fold-out case containing nine small glass bottles and tubes, from a set of ten. The tubes and bottles are sealed with cork stoppers; the two exceptions are sealed with a rubber stopper and metal screw-on lid respectively. This travelling pharmaceutical set was manufactured by Burroughs, Wellcome & Co. at their original Snow Hill buildings in London. Five of the original bottles remain in the set This pharmaceutical case belonged to Dr. Archibald Macdonald. Apart for the bottle of digitalus tablets, the containers are empty.

This item was originally donated to the Medical Society of Victoria (which later became part of the Victorian Branch of the Australian Medical Association). The A.M.A. donated its historical collection of documents and artifacts to the University of Melbourne's Medical History Museum in 1994.

Brief Description

Black metal tablet tin with hinged lid and hinged metal clasp, containing thirteen bottles and four tubes, each bottle being numbered and containing Burroughs Wellcome & Co. products. All products identified by labels and by card pasted inside lid. Bottles and tubes are fitted into individual metal divided compartments. Bottles are metal capped, with red on white labels (engraved on lid).

History of Object

Given to Sir Lance Townsend (Dean of Medicine, University of Melbourne (1971-77) during the African campaign in the 1940s. Donated by Lady Townsend.

Brief Description

Small lidded tin containing twelve glass capsules of amyl nitrate. Product labelling is printed on lid, white on purple and purple on white. Capsules are individually wrapped in cotton stockinette sleeves tied with cotton threads at each end. Packed in two rows of six capsules.
