Brief Description

Set of eight trephining instruments in wooden rectangular box with red felt lining. One instrument is missing. Box has a brass plaque on lid. Made by Savigny & Co. London, c.1840.

History of Object

This set of instruments belonged to Edward Barker , the first Lecturer in Surgery at the University of Melbourne.

Wooden case, velvet lined, containing large and small trephines (.2 and .3), skull saw (.4), elevator (.5), skull forceps (.6), scalpel (.7) and handle for trephines (.8). Handle for trephines, scalpel handle and skull saw handle all ebony. Trephine brush is missing.
