MHML0245 Nelaton's ovarian cyst forceps
Stamped in outside surface near joint, "MAYER &/MELTZER" and "S".

Brief Description

Nelaton's ovarian cyst forceps with blades at right angles to the bow handles and a catch and take-off joint. Blades are flat and disc-shaped with a serrated surfaces, central hole and each with four protruding points which when clamped together fit neatly into holes on the opposite blade.

History of Object

From accompanying label: "Nelaton's Overian Cyst Forceps: August Nélaton (1807-1873) of Paris was a contemporary of Malgaigne. Nelaton was described as a modest, kindly man who declined to involve himself in controversy. He was a careful operator and a popular teacher. He invented a bullet probe (first used in the famous Garibaldi case) and a valuable flexible rubber catheter (1860). He improved the treatment of nasopharyngeal tumors and in gynaecology he was first to describe pelvic (retro-uterine) hematoceli (1851-52). Nelaton did most to establish ovariotomy in France and his forcep was designed to clamp the sac of the ovarian cyst. His principal work in his "Elements de pathologie cirurgicale" (1844-1859)."

Brief Description

Spencer Wells artery forceps with screw joint, straight serrated blades, loop handles and catch.

History of Object

From accompanying label: "Spencer Wells is better remembered for his intriduction of the Spencer Wells artery forceps. These forceps, which can be considered as the father of all artery forceps used today, differed in design and efficiency from any instrument previously invented for the con[?] of haemorrhage. The later introduciton of the box joint is probably the only reason that the Spencer Wells is not the major artery forceps in use today. Spencer Wells was a Professor of Surgery and Pathological Anatomy, President of the Royal College of Surgeons to the Queen's household, receiving his Baronetcy in 1883. He died from a blood clot forming on the brain while touring Southern France by rail."
