Handle is grooved with indentations (depressions) for index finger and thumb. Extension has groove and locking screw and screws into top of handle. Excising device has base plate with slots, cutting blade with serrated thumb handle, locking plate with studs and locking screw. Guillotine is stored in a highly polished box with a hinged lid and catch. Box is moulded inside for individual components.

Matthieu pattern, tonsil guillotine, in three sizes; ¾, ? and 1 inch. Operates by a double action whereby the fork skewers the tonsils by thrusting forward while at the same time drawning back the cutting blade to cut the tonsils. Fork is levered to get correct angle so that the blade can slide underneath.

History of Object

"INTUBATION FOR LARYNGEAL DIPHTHERIA: 1890 Jefferys Wood learnt intubation in New York from O'Dwyer, purchased his tubes (shown below), practiced intubation in London (?first); 1891 Wood introduced intubation to Australia at the Children's Hospital, Melbourne. Five out of the first nine cases survived (previous mortality approx. 100%). He later taught Frank Scholes of Fairfield Hospital, who perfected the technique (see obituary: A.J. Wood, Med. J. Aust. 1931/1/728, and first reference).

Brief Description

Atomizer for oils and aqueous solutions. Metal screw cap has long spray tube and glass outlet tube. Spray tip has metal nasal guard fitted. Two cone-shaped glass bottles have metal necks. One bottle is clear glass, the other yellow glass and fitted with a black plastic screw cap. Grey rubber bulb has tubing and metal fittings. There is a small coil of wire, and a sheet of directions also included. The original box of red cardboard also contains a piece of cloth and a piece of cotton wool.

...Label on lid of box "DeVilbiss/No.16/Medium spray. Adjustable gold/tip. For oils or aqueous solutions./The DeVILBISS COMPANY, TOLEDO, OHIO/MADE IN U.S.A./ATOMIZER". Stamped label on box, "Pat. 1968366".

Brief Description

Battery-operated headlight with plastic and metal frame. Light consists of light bulb set within narrow rectangular frame that sits on the forehead and attached straight plastic earbands for securing the light to the doctor's head.

History of Object

This head light was donated by S.I.M. Australia to the Museumin July 1997. S.I.M. received this head light as part of a doctor's bag with instruments which they could not use as workable medical equipment.
