Lumbar puncture set or exploring syringe with 2 c.c. capacity, 2 exploring needles in canulae, and 2 longer needles with canulae. In small case with carved-out contour.

History of Object

Given to donor by Lady Newton after Alan Newton's death, for him to be remembered.

Cushing's brain clip forceps and applicators. McKenzie's punch forceps, 2 clip-holding forceps, magazine for clips and lengths of silver (?) wire.

Punch forceps cut the silver wire and create brain clips, which are then stored in clip magazine.

Brief Description

Lumbar puncture kit with graduated glass and metal pressure gauge with direciton valve, two spinal needles, glass and metal syringe, three syringe needles, two pieces of rubber tubing, spanner and metal nozzle. Kit held in blakc leatherette box with blue stain and green velvet linings. Some pieces, such as the spanner, nozzle, and two of the three syringe needles could be additions to the original kit.

History of Object

This lumbar puncture kit was originally donated to the Medical Society of Victoria (which later became part of the Victorian Branch of the Australian Medical Association). The A.M.A. donated its museum collection of documents and artefacts to the University of Melbourne in 1994.
