Cast of George Washington's maxilla by D. Waugh
Image >> |
Brief Description Cast of George Washington's maxilla, copied from original by Dorothy Waugh, in plaster with paint. History of Object The original of this abnormally large maxilla of George Washington is in a hospital at Trenton, New Jersey. The last battle of the Revolutionary war was at Valley Forge, nearby. Historical records name John Greenwood as having made two sets of dentures for General Washington - one in 1790, the other in 1795. The accompanying photograph of 3 dentures shows the use of wires attached to the upper and lower dentures made for Washington by Greenwood. In 1783, a Dr Baker had been attending the General and it was to this dentist that Washington wrote asking for "pincers to fasten the wire of his teeth and scrapers to clean them." In 1797, John Greenwood advertised: "Surgeon Dentist to the late President of the United States, John Greenwood." N.B. Item thought by cataloguer to be false - maxilla size is too large for any normal mouth. Materials and Finishes Plaster (painted). References File: Supplementary File: contains photograph mentioned in History of Object.
