Series 1 Anaesthetic Equipment

Including airways, gags, tongue depressors, inhalers, masks and intubation sets.

 

Series 2 Blood and Bleeding Equipment (excluding Blood Transfusion equipment listed separately below)

Including cautery equipment (including spirit lamps), snake bite treatment, scarifiers, lancets, cupping glasses, blood letting sets, tourniquets (one spirit lamp also included in a urine testing kit - see Medical Eqiupment - Diagnostic and Exploratory).

 

Series 3 Blood Transfusion and Infusion Equipment

Including Milroy-Matheson closed flask method; Soluvac Flasks; Ross-Wood set; British Army type; Warner & Webster type; Riddell and Julian Smith direct transfusion pumps.

 

Series 4 Ceremonial and Presentation items (excluding medals and medallions)

Including illuminated addresses, silverware, knighthood certificates and academic dress.

 

Series 5 Commemorative artefacts

Including medals, medallions and wall plaques.

 

Series 6 Documents

Includes items with some legal implication: indentures, petitions, letters including testimonials, diaries, biographies, addresses, memos, lists, minutes.

Academic, Colleges of Physicians and Surgeons, Medical Associations, Registration and other licences, including Apothecaries, Massage and Nursing.

 

Series 8 Documents - Records, Research, Lectures

Including notes and records of original research, lecture notebooks, attendance records, some patient records and treatment notes.

 

Series 9 Documents - Printed and/or Published

Includes typescripts, published articles, anniversary or special occasion programmes, speeches, reports, exam papers, blueprints, eulogies and obituaries.

 

Series 10 Electrical Equipment - for Diagonsis and Treatment (excluding x-ray machines, which are listed under Radiography)

Includes electrocardiograph machines; physiotherapy machines - galvanic, faradic, ultra-sound, and associated materials.

 

Series 11 Ephemera - Printed (mostly) Material

Including booklets, cards, pamphlets, press clippings, invitations, menus, instructions for use, advertising material (including posters), labels for medicine bottles.

 

Series 12 Laboratory Equipment - predominantly microbiological

Glassware (flasks, funnels, test tubes, etc.), bottles and dishes for growing cultures; incubators, dessicators, sterilizers, bunsen burners, centrifuges and stands.

 

Series 13 Medical bags, cases and other containers (with or without contents)

Includes First Aid cases, G.P. medicine bags and other larger containers.

 

Series 14 Medical Equipment - boxed sets for specific procedures - predominantly early Victorian

Including enema and purging equipment, stomach pumps, bleeding and cupping.

 

Series 15 Medical Instruments and Equipment - Diagnostic and Exploratory (excluding specula, stethoscopes and phonendoscopes which are listed separately, below)

Includes auriscopes, bronchoscopes, cystoscopes, clinical thermometers, endoscopes, laryngoscopes, ophthalmoscopes, sphygmomanometers, sphygmoscopes, sphygmographs, urine examination kits, blood testing kits and spirometer.

Speculum (singular), specula (plural).

Rotary, Sledge, Precision and Cathcart microtomes, ice and salt freezing microtome, Cambridge rocking microtome, Cole's section-cutting microtome, Naples inclined-plane microtome, section-cutting razors and Valentin double-bladed knife.

 

Series 25 Nursing, Invalid and Family Health Care

Includes feeding cups, bed pans, urinals, sputum mugs, bandages, and bandage winding machine. Also posset warmers, seltzer jugs, medicine spoons and measures, guide books on family health and care, weighing scales (for weighing people), fly catchers.

 

Series 26 Pharmaceutical - Pharmacy Bottles and Jars

Including coloured and clear glass bottles; ceramic wet drug jars; show globes and display jars.

 

Series 27 Pharmaceutical - Equipment

Including mortars and pestles, grinding mills, tincture press, pill rolling equipment, measures, scales and beam balances, pessary and suppository moulds.

 

Series 28 Pharmaceutical - Patent Medicines (excluding homeopathic - see Medicine, Homeopathic)

Including Savory and Moore, Burroughs and Wellcome ("Tabloid" brand), Palmer's Pharmacy and other brand name products; also tonics, cough mixtures, ointments, plasters and pills.

 

Series 29 Pharmaceutical - Prescription Registers

Includes Rundle's Chemist in Wangaratta, Beacham's Pharmacy in Melbourne, Prince Henry's Hospital, and other isolated prescription books.

 

Series 30 Photography (excluding University of Melbourne medical students, listed separately; also excludes public health and infectious disease, listed separately)

Includes black and white, sepia and colour photographs; glass plate negatives; lantern slides; depicting a wide range of medical people, buildings, conferences and societies; also material relating to medicine in the military.

Predominantly medical student class photographs (1864-1933, not complete), but also including anatomy classes, student hospital groups, Medical Students' Society, and student sporting teams.

Includes vaccination equipment; community information on infectious disease; anti-TB campaign; Victoria Tuberculosis and Lung Association photographs, posters, booklets and Christmas seals; poliomyelitis photographs and information; also material relating to diet and quarantine.

 

Series 36 Quackery

Includes electrical vibrators, miracle cure-all pills and mixtures.

 

Series 37 Radiography

Including equipment, x-rays and skiagrams (radiographic prints).

 

Series 38 Recordings - Archival Sound and Moving Image Footage

Oral histories (tuberculosis as subject); CD of heart and lung sounds; footage of ceremonies and openings; tapes and videos of speeches; small collection of videos on topics relating to medical history.

 

Series 39 Remedial and Orthopaedic Appliances

Includes splints, crutches, calipers and remedial shoe forms.
