The University of Melbourne Department of Pathology was created when the Department of Anatomy and Pathology was split in two.

This occurred in 1905 at the request of Harry Allen, the dean of the Faculty of Medicine who was also the professor of anatomy and pathology. Allen was much more interested in pathology than of anatomy and became the university's first professor of pathology while Richard Berry was appointed professor of anatomy.
