Additional Information: In 1881, the University of Melbourne dean of medicine, George Britton Halford, invited his younger colleague, Harry Allen, the lecturer in anatomy and pathology, to help him draw up recommendations for the division of the Department of Anatomy, Physiology and Pathology. The following year, a Department of Physiology was created, chaired by Halford, along with a Department of Anatomy and Pathology, chaired by Allen. With the growth of the medical school, these positions were increasingly onerous, although Halford continued as professor of physiology and dean of medicine until 1896, aged 71. In 1905, the University Council agreed to divide the Department of Anatomy and Pathology into separate Departments of Anatomy and of Pathology. Allen took the Chair of Pathology and the Council appointed Richard Berry to the Chair of Anatomy. | |
