During the 1990s, the Department of Anatomy of the University of Melbourne developed cell biology as a major part of its teaching and research profile. Reflecting this development, the title of the Department was changed to Anatomy and Cell Biology at the beginning of 1993.

The first chairman of the Department of Anatomy and Cell Biology was Graeme Ryan. When he resigned at the end of 1995, Daine Alcorn was appointed to the vacant chair and head of department with John (?) Furness as Deputy Head. A system of rotating the Head of Department position was instituted with Furness returning to the position in 1999 and Alcorn from January 2000, with Tony Goodwin as Deputy Head. With Alcorn's resignation in , Goodwin became head of Department.
