The long-standing relationship between the University of Melbourne and the dental profession started in 1904 when the Australian College of Dentistry affiliated with the university. Over the following decades, thousands of students were taught by specialist dental staff, professors of several chairs of dentistry and by staff of the Faculty of Medicine. The strong relationship between medicine and dentistry at Melbourne was formalised in 1989 with the creation of a Faculty of Medicine and Dentistry. This title was soon superseded when the Faculty took on additional responsibilities for students of health sciences in 1991.
