Born: 17 September 1912  Geelong, Victoria, Australia.  Died: 26 March 1983.

Lance Townsend was appointed University of Melbourne Professor of Obstetrics and Gynaecology in 1951, retaining the position until 1977.

From 1971 to 1977 he was also Dean of the Faculty of Medicine. In 1978 he was appointed Assistant Vice-Chancellor of the University.

In his later years he was a significant influence on the direction of health administration in Victoria, co-chairing an inquiry into health services in Victoria which produced findings widely known as the Syme-Townsend report.

Appointed to conduct an inquiry into Victorian health services with Sir Colin Syme, a major outcome of which was the creation of the Health Commission of Victoria.

Appointed Assistant Vice-Chancellor

1979

Appointed foundation Chairman of the Health Commission of Victoria's Health Advisory Council.

1979

Foundation Fellow of the Royal Australian College of Obstetricians and Gynaecologists

President, Austin Hospital.
