The founders of the medical course at the University of Melbourne concluded early on that it was necessary to provide students with first-hand experience of patient care and treatment. For some twenty years, ad hoc arrangements were entered into with the medical staff of the Melbourne Hospital to instruct medical students in the appropriate care and treatment of patients. In 1887, a formal arrangement was made between the University and the Hospital for paid clinical instruction of students. Numerous clinical schools have been created by the University since then in hospitals and other health care facilities around Victoria. |
