The relationship between the University of Melbourne and the Melbourne Hospital (later renamed the Royal Melbourne Hospital) started in 1864, two years after the first students began their medical training at the University. In that year, the Hospital agreed to provide basic clinical training to three University of Melbourne medical students, Patrick Moloney, William Rees and Alexander Mackie, then in their third year of training. The students paid fees to observe the medical and surgical practices of the honorary physicians and surgeons at the Hospital. In later years, the relationship strengthened after the University requested that the Hospital maintain a record of each students' exposure to significant areas of medical practice. In addition, students were permitted to practise their clinical skills on patients under supervision. In 1955, many years after the establishment of a Clinical School, the University's first clinical Chair in Medicine was established at the Hospital. The Clinical School was expanded in the 1990s with the amalgamation of the Royal Melbourne Hospital and the Western Hospital. |
