Obstetrical and gynaecological training for University of Melbourne medical undergraduate and postgraduate students was given at the Lying-In Hospital, now the Royal Women's Hospital from the 1860s.

A more formal "clinical school" arrangement was introduced by Professor Marshall Allan.
