The University of Melbourne (1853 - )

The University of Melbourne was the first university in Victoria and the second in Australia. Legislation for its establishment was passed by the Parliament of Victoria in 1853 and, the following year, the foundation stone was laid.

The first students started classes in April 1855.

By the beginning of the 21st Century, there were around 34,000 enrolled students and 13 Faculties.
