Gerard Crock was the University of Melbourne's Ringland Anderson Professor of Ophthalmology from 1963 to 1986 in what was the first autonomous department within the University's Faculty of Medicine and the first ophthalmic academic department in Australia. He established a registrar training program which saw Melbourne become a leading centre for ophthalmology training in Australia and the Asia-Pacific region. He pioneered ophthalmic microsurgery in Australia and made contributions to binocular indirect ophthalmoscopy, fluorescein angiography, vitreo-retinal surgery and corneal grafting techniques. He was elected Emeritus Professor of the University of Melbourne in 1988. |
